MOKA 2011

Many-Body Physics, 15 ECTS cr

MOKA has traditionally been a course that aims at giving tools for a deeper understanding of many-body physics phenomena. Last year its contents were updated - the current emphasis is on statistical physics, critical phenomena, general ideas and tools such as the renormalization group and series expansions. The homework exercises constitute an important (and time-consuming) part of the course.

Lecturer: Esko Keski-Vakkuri
Assistant: Lasse Franti
Lectures: Mon 12-14, Wed 10-12 in the HIP seminar room A315.
Exercise sessions: Mon 9-12 in room A315.
No lectures or exercise sessions during the mid-term break: week 43, Oct 24-28.

Final exam: date TBA

The course will this year follow the textbook:
Mehran Kardar: Statistical Physics of Fields, Cambridge University Press 2007 (ISBN 978-0-521-87341-3).

The old lecture notes by K. Enqvist and K. Kajantie are still available here: Chapters 1,2,3 (some reorganisation, some corrections and additions), Chapter 4 (small corrections), Chapter 5 (some corrections and additions), Chapter 6 (some corrections, deletions and additions), Chapter 7 (small corrections). They provide useful alternative takes on some of the topics in the course (but beware of printing errors!).
