Fysikerfest 2005
On November 17 begins FysikerFest '05, organized in cooperation with Resonanssi (University of Helsinki) and Fyysikkokilta (Helsinki University of Technology). Once more physicists from all over Finland gather round to enjoy a glance at the achievements of modern science as well as a lively evening program. This year, the World Year of Physics, will be the fifth contemporary FysikerFest to be organised. In honour of this grand anniversary we have also invited students from other Nordic countries and the Baltic. Because now truly is the festival year of FysikerFest, we have decided to extend the happening to a glorious four days.
The first day of FysikerFest 2005 is in Otaniemi, Espoo. During the morning the participants are shown to their accomodations. The opening speech and the first lectures are heard at noon. In the meantime, between lectures, lunch and coffee are served. The rest of the afternoon consists of excursions to nearby sites of special interest. The evening program is at the Baarikärpänen restaurant.
The second day is at the Kumpula campus of the University of Helsinki. Following tradition, the opening hours are reserved for lectures and the afternoon hours for excursions. The party in the evening will be in the city center, at Domus Academica, an appropriate place for an old-fashioned student party.
The third day is in Otaniemi. We will hear lectures about interesting subjects during the morning and afternoon. After lectures we will compete for the "kyykkä" (a Finnish game) championship of Finnish Physics Students and prepare for the grand event of the seminar: the evening feast. At some point in the evening there is the possibility of going to the sauna.
The History of FysikerFest
Fyysikkokilta started organising FysikerFests every autumn of odd-numbered years in the early 1990s.
In the beginning it was supposed to be a means of handling international contacts, mostly to Sweden.
During the late 1990s FysikerFest participants were mostly members of Fyysikkokilta.
There was a calling for a national event for physics students at the dawn of the new millenium,
and FysikerFest answered the call. So FysikerFest 2001 was organised in cooperation with the late IAPS Finland
(now Finnish Association of Physics Students) and Fyysikkokilta, and all physics students of the country were invited.
After FysikerFest 2001 everyone agreed that FysikerFest clearly had a future as an event organised every year.
Nowadays FysikerFest is organized yearly in November at some university in Finland (where physics is taught)
by the local physics student organisation in collaboration with the Finnish Association of Physics Students.
FysikerFest gathers together annually some one hundred physics students from all over Finland to attend lectures and spend time together.
Program
You can get the program here.
Registration and payment for foreign participants
Foreign participants register by sending an e-mail to Mr Olli-Kalle Kauppinen before October 28. The 10 Euro participation fee will be collected upon arrival.
The fee covers the whole of the seminar, notwithstanding lunches. We may have to charge a couple of Euros for the evening dinner, but this is not yet certain. The dress code in for the gala dinner is decent, so a suit is not obligatory. In the registration email you should include the participants' names as well as any possible food allergies, so that they can be taken into account in the planning of the evening dinner.
Accomodation
We offer you a floor accomodation. Remember to take some
kind of mattress and sleeping bag with you. Also a pillow might be
comfortable. Showers are available at any time.
Excursions
There will be excursions to nearby research facilities and
laboratories on Thursday and on Friday. Due to the high number of the places to be
visited the excursions will overlap to some degree, so you will not have time to visit
every place. The sites of the excursions will be announced at this site later.
Excursion targets in Otaniemi: Low Temperature Laboratory,
Metrology Research Institute, The Positron Group
Excursion targets in Kumpula: Accelerator Laboratory, Institute of Seismology, Department of Astronomy
(Observatory), Division of X-ray Physics, Finnish Institute of Marine Research
